Rear-view mirrors, as prescribed by law, are compulsory on every motorcycle and scooter. Both single-lane and two-lane motor vehicles must have mirrors or other devices for indirect vision that are designed or fitted in such a way that the driver can observe all traffic events that are essential for him or her.

The European regulation ECE-R81 also regulates the condition that a rear-view mirror must have. It must be adjustable, it must not have any edges that could cause injury and the mirror surface must not be less than 69 square centimetres. In addition, they must not move during normal use and must be adjustable by the rider in a normal riding position.

Mopeds with a maximum design speed of no more than 50 km/h only need one rear-view mirror, while vehicles with a maximum speed of over 50 km/h must have two rear-view mirrors.
